HIP HOP MUSIC VIDEOS AND POPULAR CULTURE
Every day, our media tells us stories about what is going on in our world today, from politics, to protests, to local news, and many more ideas. But, have you ever thought about how our popular culture is represented through hip hop?
Looking into the branches of music, music videos from all different genres each have a special theme to them, with some themes being deeper than others. There are themes of love and happiness, but there are also themes involving politics and representation of power structures in our world. Those types of music videos are significantly special, because they provide insight on how the media plays a role in shaping our understanding of popular culture. Specifically focusing on hip hop music videos, the purpose of my website is to provide an understanding of how these types of music videos are essential to understanding popular culture, as well as the politics of representation in our society today. I am going to show how over time, different music videos in hip hop culture have set various ideologies on how American society is seen and represented as a whole. This includes, but is not limited to, videos that discuss sensitive topics such as police brutality, government opposition, as well as the treatment of race.

This website explores the pivotal role race plays in media representation, focusing specifically on how hip-hop videos serve as a critical lens for understanding racial dynamics. Through their work, hip-hop artists present hegemonic ideologies, shedding light on how American society grapples with issues such as police brutality, political representation, and broader societal challenges.

Additionally, the site features a curated timeline of hip-hop music videos spanning from the 1990s to today. This timeline highlights influential artists, from Public Enemy to Childish Gambino, who have used their platforms to address racial issues and shape the discourse within popular culture.
